Childrens Dental Care

Toothache in children-Child's first visit to the dentist Guidlines | North Hunter Dental-Birmingham, MIYour Child's First Trip to the Dentist
The experienced and knowledgeable staff at North Hunter Dental understand kids and their dental needs.  First, we make sure your child feels comfortable, relaxed and very special when he or she comes into our dental office.  Getting your child to feel good about their smile will instill confidence and reassure them that good dental hygiene pays off.  Getting a good report gives your child a feeling of accomplishment and confirms they're doing a good job. During your child's office visit, Dr. Sansone and his team will answer questions you may have, address any concerns or immediate dental issues he may find based on your child's evaluation.

Teaching children at a very young age to start taking proper care of their teeth and gums is key to making sure their mouth, teeth and gums stay healthy on into adulthood and helps instill good dental hygiene habits. Close attention should also be paid to a child's incoming adult teeth to ensure they grow into their proper position without any complications. It's also important to get your child feeling comfortable with going to the dentist for regular checkups at an early age.  The key concerns include getting children to  brush and rinse daily, go for routine dental exams and have any necessary treatments such as sealants, extractions, fillings, braces or other orthodontic work done when needed and not leave neglected. Taking good care of your child's teeth now at an early age will help ensure unnecessary problems into adulthood.

Dental Care for Children – Our Top Recommendations

Complete Dental at North Hunter Dental-Birmingham, MI 1) Your child's first visit to the dentist should be between the time the first tooth appears  (around 6 months) and the time when the primary adult teeth are starting to become visible (around 2 years old).
2) At around 2-3 years of age, your child should start to have regular 6 month checkups and cleanings.
3) Parents should bring their child along to their dental visit as it's a good way to start acclimating the child early on to the people, sounds, smells and surrounding environment of the dental office.
4) Encouraging children to keep up the good job they are doing on their teeth will help build confidence, minimize dental anxiety and help build strong dental hygiene practices on into adulthood.
5) Studies show that children who are taught to brush their teeth daily to prevent cavities will feel much more comfortable when it comes time to go to the dentist.
6) Children with any oral health issues or concerns should see the dentist immediately for evaluation and any necessary treatment. Most dental work can be performed right here in our office. In some cases, where the child may need a specialist, Dr. Sansone will refer a respected pediatric dentist in your area.

Caring for Your Child's Teeth

1) Take your child to a dentist every 6 months to prevent complications.
2) Inform the dentist if your child still thumb sucks or breathes through the mouth when sleeping.
3) A child's teeth and gums should be brushed at least twice each day and especially before bed.
4) No juices or sugary drinks before bedtime without brushing teeth.
5) Electric tooth brushes can clean your child's teeth better than manual ones.
6) If your child plays sports, make sure he or she wears an athletic mouthguard to protect against a tooth getting broken, chipped or knocked out.
7) When your child's permanent adult teeth grow in, he or she should begin flossing each evening before bed.
8) When children reach their teens, braces or extractions may be needed to prevent crooked teeth and long-term dental problems into adulthood.
9) Wisdom tooth extraction may be recommended during the teen years because as an adult, the procedure can be more traumatic and cause further dental complications.
